Marischal College, founded in 1593 and the second University of Aberdeen, and King's College, founded in 1495, merged in 1860 to form the Modern University of Aberdeen. Construction of the present Marischal College building began in the 1830s and was completed in 1906. It is the second largest granite building in the world. Teaching and research now falls within the domain of the Foresterhill and King's College campuses. The Marischal College building is leased to Aberdeen City Council, where it has been the seat since 2009.
