SEMANA GRANDE DE BILBAO

The biggest celebration in Bilbao is the Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia in Basque), celebrated for 9 days starting on the Saturday following the 15th of August. The Arenal, a large esplanade located in front of the Arriaga Theatre, on the banks of the river, is the stronghold of the Semana Grande. This is where the txoznas are concentrated, ephemeral stands where the kalimotxo (a mixture of wine and cola) flows and the atmosphere is in full swing. At the same time, a rich programme of fireworks, bullfights, concerts and children's activities provide entertainment throughout the week.
