Krasnodar was founded in 1793 after the victory of the Russians over the Turkish armies. It was first called Ekaterinodar, in homage to the victorious empress. The city experienced its boom in the second half of the 19th century, with the end of the Caucasus Wars, for which it served as a rear base for the Russian armies. After the Second World War, the centre was particularly well restored and retains a Belle Époque atmosphere around Krasnaya Street. At weekends, some streets are closed to traffic to allow the installation of terraces and street musicians. For with its 700,000 inhabitants, Krasnodar is today a young city and is known as a hipster hub in southern Russia.
