30 km from Rostov and 7 km from the sea, Azov was in the 12th century a Genoese trading post (similar trading posts were established in the Crimea), which captured part of the traffic of the Silk Roads. The city was taken by the Turks in 1472, who transformed it into a fortress opening an access to the sea for their troops settled in the steppe. It is only in 1735 that the Russians took the city definitively
