Located 50 km from Rostov, Novotcherkassk (170,000 inhabitants) has been the capital of the Don Cossacks since they decided, at the beginning of the 19th century, to abandon their former capital Cherkassk (which became Starotcherkassk "old Cherkassk") to create a new city, better situated and able to accommodate a growing population. This is also the setting for the novel The Peaceful Gift by Mikhail Sholokhov, one of the five Russian authors to have received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
