With its 1,171,000 inhabitants, Samara is on the banks of the Volga, and at the same time close to the border with Kazakhstan. The homeland of Russian beer and the Russian automobile industry is also a very pleasant and romantic city, especially in spring and summer, when city dwellers love to stroll along the banks of the river. Samara is particularly known for its turn-of-the-century town planning, which gave pride of place to the Severnyi Modern, (understand: "Nordic modern"), the Russian version of Art Nouveau. The streets of the city centre are decorated with magnificent bourgeois buildings and mansions dating from the 1900s. Some of these houses even have half-timbering, which is particularly rare in Russia.
