Apatity and its 58,000 inhabitants are located 185 km south of Murmansk on the shores of Lake Imandra. The city takes its name from apatite, a mineral used in the chemical industry, whose most important deposits in the world are found on the Kola peninsula. Apatity was therefore created to accommodate the factories where apatite is transported from the Kirovsk mines. The interest of the city is therefore primarily geological, since it is home to several museums and mineral research institutes. Coming from Murmansk, the road that winds through forests and hills is beautiful - apart from the areas ravaged by the acidic waste from the former Montchegorsk Nickel Combine
