Сonstruite by Basil III between 1506 and 1516 on the foundations of a 13th century cathedral. The central part, with four pillars and three domes, is surrounded by open galleries, modelled on the cathedral of the Archangel Saint Michael of the Moscow Kremlin. The western narthex housed the library where the famous epic poem The Tale of Igor's Countryside was found in the 18th century: the oldest known Russian literary work (late 12th century).
