Yaroslavl is one of the oldest and most famous cities in Russia. Formerly a thriving commercial hub, the city has several splendid churches that you can begin to appreciate from the river. Despite its 600,000 inhabitants, the city has a pleasant provincial feel. Less northern than Kostroma, less industrial than Ivanovo, less Muscovite than Sergiev Possad, it seems to be the most southern, despite its position in relation to the other cities of this circuit. The animation is concentrated around the main street, which can be spotted very quickly: it runs from the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, on the banks of the Volga, to the Theatre Square. In the vicinity, between the Ouglitch road and the Kotorosl valley, you will find many churches, some of which house remarkable paintings. The most beautiful works are in the chapels of St. Dimitri and St. George. After crossing the Netentcha ravine, you reach the small church of St. Peter the Metropolitan and then the church of St. Nicholas the Wetter, the most interesting in the area. It is typical of the region, with its five domes, without a base, chapels with corners ending in chatior and a gallery. Façades and window frames are decorated with earthenware tiles, the frescoes inside evoke the life of Saint Nicolas
