MONASTERY OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE SAVIOR

This monastery, founded in the 14th century on the site of another older one, is fortified by a thick wall, covered by a small wooden gable roof. During the 17th century, the monastery gained importance (in 1612 it housed the staff of Minin and Pozharski) and its economic power aroused the anger of the town's inhabitants, who fought for years against its expansion (as evidenced by the anticlerical frescoes in the Church of St Nicholas of Nadecina).
