RESURRECTION CHURCH

This 1670 church commissioned by Metropolitan Ionas is hidden in the guardhouse of the kremlin walls, above the entrance that once gave access to the residence of the metropolitan and the living quarters of the princes. The building has a delicate wooden roof with twenty-four decorative gables (or "zakomary"). The iconostasis is higher than in an ordinary church, symbolizing the superiority of the Church over the State.
