Built in 1601, it was one of the largest feudal castles in Japan from the beginning. The architect-builder, Kiyomasa Katō, was considered one of the masters of castle and fortress architecture. With its 120 walls and 49 turrets, the castle was considered invincible. However, it was in 1877 that Takamori Saigō managed to storm it during the Satsuma Rebellion. Partially destroyed by the 2016 earthquake, today it is still under renovation. Volunteer guides offer tours to tourists. An unmissable site!

On ne peut pas aller à Kumamoto sans visiter son chateau. J'ai eu la chance de le visiter au printemps lors de la floraison des cerisiers. Ca a été un spectacle unique.

Malheureusement, le chateau a subit de gros dégats, probablement irréversibles, lors du récent tremblement de terre.

The main attractions of Kumamoto is undoubtedly its castle, considered one of three more beautiful in Japan with those of Himeji and Matsumoto.
Tiny room of ashes in 1877 when the revolt of Satsuma, it was completely renovated in 1960. Only the Uto turret, entirely in pine, oak and camphor, is of time (1607). You can visit it, as well as the two towers main housing a museum tracing the history.
It is also possible to visit the Hon-Maru palace which was part of the castle and which currently is the subject of a programme of restoration impressive. Each room is the subject of a meticulous reconstruction while based on the historic documents and paintings of the time and the remains of the former palace discovered during the excavations. It is far from being completed, but the already finished rooms are superb!
