Honmyo-ji Temple is a temple of the Nichiren School of Buddhism located on a mountain in the west of the city. It was first established in Osaka in 1585, and was first moved to Kumamoto Castle before being moved again to its present location. In this temple stands the mausoleum of the castle's architect, Kiyomasa Katō. The temple treasury contains some items related to the founder of the castle. The main building was rebuilt in 1884, the original having been burned in 1877 during the Seinan War.
