It is the oldest temple in Hiroshima. It is one of the 'Ankokuji' temples built in the 14th century. The Golden Pavilion (Kondo), a national treasure, is said to be the largest structure built in Japan using construction methods dating back to the Tang Dynasty in China. The Kondo has massive beams, the largest measuring over seven meters in length. Paintings of angels and celestial dragons can be seen on the ceiling. It houses a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, known as the Medicine Buddha.
