TEMPLE BODAIJI

Founded over a thousand years ago, the Bodaiji temple makes Mount Osore a place of prayer and remembrance. Every summer, it plays host to the Itako festival, a group of blind mediums trained to communicate with the dead. For several days, in a timeless atmosphere, the living come to hear the voices of their departed loved ones. The temple also offers simple, vegetarian accommodation, conducive to meditation. Day and overnight visitors alike can take advantage of the hot baths nestled within the grounds.
