The museum building was designed by the famous Japanese architect Tadao Andō. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to him. The museum's galleries house some 8,000 works of art, produced by artists from Hyōgo prefecture or with strong links to it. Of particular note is the space dedicated to Ryōhei Koiso and Heizō Kanayama, two renowned artists of modern Japanese painting.
