Along with the onsen from Dōgo and Shirahama, Arima onsen is one of the three oldest onsen in Japan. Arima became a very popular spa town among the Japanese population in the Edo period, thanks to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the three great unifiers of Japan, who regularly went there to enjoy the baths and who organized several great tea ceremonies there with the famous master Sen no Rikyū. Today, there are still old ryokan and traditional alleys where it is pleasant to stroll.
