Montezuma Castle, located 40 km south of Sedona, is one of the best preserved Indian settlements in the region
Forty miles south of Sedona, Montezuma Castle is one of the best preserved Indian settlements in the region. The site was settled by the Sinaguas, who farmed the surrounding land between the 12th and 14th centuries, before abandoning the area. The good state of conservation of the ruins is explained in part by their privileged location, sheltered from the rain and sun, as well as their early classification as a national monument, in 1906. Their multi-story construction is spectacular.
