NIZWA MUSEUM
Opening in November 2023 and created from scratch on the initiative of a passionate private collector, this museum is a model of its kind. Mohammed, the owner, began criss-crossing the Sultanate in 2019 in search of ancient objects emblematic of Oman. With no intention whatsoever at the outset, other than a passion for his country, Mohammed spent several years buying up lots of objects and spending time asking the elders about all these relics. Humbly, he learned the manufacturing techniques of yesteryear and was thus able to restore old doors, for example, or ancient pottery. After four years, Mohammed decided to exhibit his antiques to the public. In 2023, he will bring together two restored houses in the old town to showcase his collection of over 2,600 pieces. On two floors, 8 beautifully appointed galleries follow one another. All sorts of ancient objects are on display: over 30 doors, pottery, weapons, traditional dress, Omani handicrafts... all extremely well documented. When the museum first opened, Mohammed himself gave tours, but soon became overwhelmed and now prefers to keep a low profile. If you are lucky enough to meet him, you'll discover that he's a wealth of knowledge, knowing every room in his museum by heart, and can spend hours telling the story behind any given object.
Dedicated to museum guests: the charming rooftop Makram Café, Makram meaning generous in Arabic... that says it all!
