HALWA ALSAIFI FACTORY
The store of this traditional halwa factory in the Nizwa souk is a must for any visitor to the area! A veritable institution, the reputation of this confectionery extends far beyond the city's borders, and the halwa sold here is probably one of the best in the country. The factory was founded by the Alsaifi family in 1972, and the same family has been making this emblematic Omani cake for over 50 years. The secret recipe includes many different flavors, but the main ingredients are rosewater, butter, white or brown sugar, saffron, cardamom, walnuts and starch. Many variations are also available: fig halwa, honey halwa, rose halwa or special halwa... to discover. Omanis enjoy this dessert at festivities such as weddings and Eid. In fact, the factory, which employs around 50 people all year round, increases its workforce to 150 during Eid week, when it runs 24 hours a day to keep up with demand. If you have the time, don't hesitate to ask the salespeople behind the counter for information. There's also a lounge next to the store where you can relax, get explanations and taste different kinds of halwa. Prices are only slightly higher than elsewhere, but the quality is much better, and the packaging is designed for easy transport of the cakes. This is your chance to take home a typical Omani souvenir!
