Continuing northeast, 7 km from Berd, and 3 km before the village of Varagavan, which almost adjoins the border with Azerbaijan, the monastery of Nor Vagaravank bears witness to the influence of the historic province of Artsakh (or Nagorno-Karabagh), on which in the Middle Ages the monastic complex depended, which rises on a wooded plateau overlooking the Hakhoum River, a tributary of the Kuras. This complex developed around a hermitage founded in 1 193 by Prince David Kiurikian of Nor Berd. Cautionary measures are even more necessary, due to the proximity of the border.
