On leaving Idjevan, instead of continuing north, we will go for about 15 km into the mountains east of the city to Berd, the last town before the border with Azerbaijan. It is there, or rather a little further east still, on a wooded hill overlooking the village of Chinari, that the monastery of Khoranashat is located. Needless to say, it is preferable to be accompanied by a guide, so as not to risk getting lost in Azerbaijan. We must remain cautious in this border area, as there are frequent exchanges of fire.
