MONUMENTO A CRISTO REY

If Rio de Janeiro has its Christ the Redeemer, Santiago de Cali has its Christ the King. The view is not as spectacular here, but the Cristo Rey still offers a nice panorama. Erected on the Cerro de Los Cristales, at an altitude of 1,474 meters, this statue is the tenth largest statue of Christ in the world. With its 26 m height, it weighs no less than 464 tons. The statue was built between 1949 and 1953 by the Italian sculptor Alideo Tazzioli and was inaugurated on October 25, 1953, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Thousand Days War (1899-1902).
