I had a regrettable experience at the Luxury Beach Club Tour, which was anything but luxurious. The day began with a frustrating one-hour wait in the blazing sun to get a wristband. The check-in process was extremely inefficient, involving queuing up to enter the pier, then separately paying a harbor tax of 26,500 COP (about USD 6.90) per person – a cost not disclosed until after booking. To make matters worse, at the Luxury Counter, only one of the two staff members was working, while the other was preoccupied with his phone, making the line move at a snail's pace. And no one spoke English.
We then waited another 30 minutes for the boat to leave, arriving over two hours after the scheduled meeting time. The beach was a mere 20 meters long, surrounded by neighboring beaches, leading to a cacophony of music. Swimming was far from enjoyable with the constant influx of boats, highlighted by the fuel boat arriving and turning on its loud generators – a bizarre aspect of this so-called luxury experience.
No towels were provided. At the bar, where drinks were supposedly included, essentials like cola or sparkling water were missing, resulting in tasteless mojitos. The all-inclusive drinks turned into a debate every time I tried to get a drink for my companion, with the expectation being that each person should queue individually.
Booking a bed was a waste unless you're lucky to get one in the front rows. Otherwise, you might end up near the toilets, far from the beach. The normal loungers were a better choice. The non-adjustable sun umbrellas left us exposed to direct sunlight.
The buffet lunch was another letdown. It opened 10 minutes late and closed precisely on time, serving only one piece of meat and fish per person. The food distribution felt like a prison, with announcements and strict limits. The only edible part was the main course – the soup was just a collection of fish bones.
Overall, this tour was a huge disappointment and definitely not worth the money. It seemed like a pure profit-making scheme with mostly rude treatment. Beware of the numerous 5-star reviews from local guides and travel agencies – they don't seem to be based on genuine experiences.
If you value your life stay away! Worst experience of my life. The only way to get to the island is on a boat. The boat services do not care for your life. The waves were so high and bad and there people were going so unnecessarily fast. They overloaded the boat with people and luggage. There was no safety standard whatsoever. They only care about making it to the next appointment. We were almost thrown off the boat so man times. If you value your life stay away!
This place beat my expectations for sure. I def give it 5 stars (not comparing what other countries 5 stars would be). The location was perfect for us we didn’t not even leave the hotel. The majority of the staff was personable, were friendly, very accommodating, and a pleasure to interact with. The males more than the females though. We obtained paddleboards from German that comes every morning. He too was amazing. We were expecting only breakfast and we ended up getting 3 meals a day! Wish I had know that ahead of time, I don’t think that information was in the description. The food was pretty good and better than other places we have been to. I recommend their ceviche and their mojitos.
A few things to know before booking, contact the hotel for transportation. Wish I did better planning ahead of time. For $90.000 you get from Cartagena to the Island leaving at 8am ONLY. The return for also $90.000 but at 3pm ONLY. So you better have a 7pm or later flight to account for travel. We did not and had to get a private boat the hotel assisted us so much in getting.
Some recommendations for the hotel. I’d like to see some mattress protectors to keep mattresses clean (they were) and thin quilts to cover the bed. Seems people only use sheets and I didn’t want to use the blankets in the closet. Also we didn’t know we couldn’t not add a tip at check out. We did end up giving money to reception to split between everyone at check out, but had I know I would have brought more money/change to give individually because the staff was AMAZING.
We spent four nights at Isla del Sol and it was great! Three meals a day are included in the price of the room and the food was good. You can also buy snacks and other food at the bar. The room was clean and the air conditioning worked well. The views were gorgeous. The beach and pool were both great - perfect for our three kids. The hotel offers daily activities including snorkeling, massages, a boat ride to the oceanarium, an ecological tour and the bioluminescent tour. The bioluminescent tour wasn’t great, but that could have just been because of the moon. All the other tours were great though. Also, the boats back to Cartagena leave at 3:00 each day but the hotel can arrange a boat for you earlier if you ask.
