The Plaza de Toros, located next to the Parque de la Independancia, is the capital's iconic bullring. Inaugurated in 1931, it has long hosted bullfighting shows. Bullfights have been very controversial and have given rise to major anti-bullfighting demonstrations in recent years, until they were banned in Bogotá. The bullring is now mainly used as a stage for cultural events such as the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro.
