Tel (0612) 42 51 88/55 80 12The island, which is the main attraction to visit, is far from the station. Perhaps the easiest thing is to go by taxi. Extending over 2 650 ha, it is a real natural reserve. The northern tip of the island, where the museum is located, is magnificent and offers a superb panorama. You can walk along the cliff. But in reality the only interest is the museum (open every day except Monday from 10 am to 17 pm). Located on the northern end of the island, the Cossacks history is discovered as well as a collection of archaeological remains, weapons and objects found on the island and in the region. The scythians idols facing the river are obviously a small staging of the Soviet era to bring together all the historic interests of the city in one single point. Finally, you should not leave the island of Khortitsa without seeing the city's place of legend: oak for 700 years. With a trunk with a circumference of 7 m, this oak is, it is said, the place where the Cossacks were found to make their decisions; in particular, they would have gathered to send the famous letter of insult to the Sultan of Turks, a scene immortalized by the famous Repine Painting whose stinging irony cannot leave the public indifferent. It is in this oak too that the cossack Bohdan Khmelnytsky would have harangué his troops before taking them to battle against Poland in 1648.
