PLAZA ARTIGAS

Together with the Battle Plaza, it is one of the major poles of the city. There is the unmistakable statue of the Father of the Nation and his horse, created in a contest by Armando Gonzalez in 1953. It was transported for 48 hours from the capital with great care so as not to damage the 6,000 agate plates of the pedestal made by the craftsmen of Artigas. Three years later, a chest containing photographs and writings about the Independence was buried under the statue. The time capsule will be opened in 2052.
