Today, Artigas is the capital of the department that bears the same name. Founded in 1852, it was called Villa San Eugenio del Careim until 1915, when it became a "city". With its low houses, wide streets and tax-free stores, it is not very interesting for tourists, except perhaps for its strong Brazilian influence, which can be felt even in the language spoken, where, in addition to Spanish, there is a Portuguese accent. This strange dialect is called "portuñol". Moreover, this area contains the most important mineral deposits of the country (agates and amethysts, in particular) and it is possible to visit the mines.
