MAUSOLEO DEL GENERAL LEANDRO GÓMEZ

This site tells the story of Paysandú's heroic defense at the very spot where the events took place, and where the heroes paid with their lives. In the heart of the town lies General Leandro Gómez, who for many years resisted Venancio Flores' attack. The mausoleum was inaugurated in 1984 and contains the general's ashes and uniform. A statue has been erected in his honor and a monument pays tribute to all the soldiers who died defending the city. The general's correspondence, photographs and weapons also bear witness to the era.
