The No, Japan's oldest theatre, is honoured at the Takigi No festival, where the troupes play in the open air.
The entrance to the shrine is announced by a large red torii. It was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1, 100th anniversary of the city and to symbolize the rebirth of a city in decline. This is the reason why the architecture is based on the first imperial palace of the Heian period. It is dedicated to both Emperors Kammu and Kōmei (father of Meiji), the first and last of the emperors to reside in Kyoto. The former was buried in the shrine in 1895 and the latter in 1940. The gardens are also inspired by the Heian style.
