This town is infamous in Namibian history for housing in its cemetery the graves of the many soldiers who fell in 1904 in the bloody battle of Waterberg between the Germans and Herero. Today, the prosperity of Otjiwarongo ("pleasant place" in Herero) is based on cattle farming. As a crossroads of the northern routes to Zambia, Zimbabwe or, in Namibia, to Etosha Park, Bushmanland, Caprivi Point and Waterberg, the town is worth a visit (start at the tourist office). You can even spend the night here, although many travelers prefer the excellent game ranches around town.
