Opuwo, which means "terminus" or "stop" in the Himba language, is little more than a sad statement on the effects of the "modernization" of traditional pastoral populations. It is generally preferable to use a local guide so as not to fall into voyeuristic tourism. Opuwo is the last serious supply point in this region: small supermarket, craft shop, bakery, petrol station. The experience of shopping in a famous department store among himba women in traditional dress, who come here to buy the butter they need to coat themselves, is quite memorable.
