Windhoek is probably the only capital city with a statue of kudu, one of Africa's largest antelopes. It recalls the rinderpest epidemic of 1896, which killed a large number of kudu. This shows how central livestock farming is in this country where agriculture (in the broadest sense) is the country's largest provider of employment and where a meal without meat is simply inconceivable for most families.
