Located north of Saint-Maurice, the Grotte aux Fées is a natural cavity dug into the cliff overlooking the town. Known since Antiquity, it was only really explored in 1831. Its main gallery was built to access, after a 500 m walk, a 77 m high waterfall and a small lake, the extreme point of the visit. It was the first cave to be opened to the public in Switzerland (1863) and since then it has been a wonderful natural spectacle for visitors. Several other galleries, which are not open to the public, are connected to it.
