Petit Futé's opinion on JUNGFRAUJOCH
The "Jungfraujoch Top of Europe"... An unmissable excursion, defined by many superlatives: Imagine arriving at the highest station in Europe at 3545 m. The view from the top is breathtaking! Plan to experience it intensely by using the Eiger Express cable car (open since December 2020), or opt for the traditional route by train. Listed as a UNESCO Alpine World Heritage Site, the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, is the pride of the region. For more than 100 years, this train has performed the feat of linking the towns on the plains to this observation deck, which is truly enthroned in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Up there, it is another world, one of eternal snow, perpetual cold (take warm clothes!) and almost constant sunshine. It is difficult to realize how much titanic work was necessary to allow this line dug in the mountain.
Incredible activities not to be missed once at the top:
The Jungfraujoch site houses a research laboratory for geology, climatology, physics, meteorology and astronomy. On site, you can taste chocolate or try your hand at snowtubing on the Snow Fun Park (May to October).
The Jungfraujoch observatory. Once you reach the summit at 3454 m, the observatory is a real attraction! In addition to the view of the entire surrounding Alpine chain, the circular trail includes a gallery of ice with sculpted animals that will delight families - there's the squirrel and its nut from the Ice Age! - a 360° panoramic screen replicating the view from the summit, a collection of miniatures, restaurants, watch and souvenir shops, and various observation decks, including the glacier plateau - the ideal place to take photos with the Swiss flag and the longest glacier in the Alps: the Aletsch glacier. Weather permitting, there is a fun park with sledging and skiing, all free of charge, and a small walking trail.
The Ice Palace, which covers the old galleries dug by the mountain guides, leads you to discover ephemeral works of art such as an eagle, a penguin... A special and unusual dimension for an art gallery made of ice.
The footpath to the Mönchsjoch hut. This is the path that you must take with good hiking boots to get away from the noisy crowd that rushes to take selfies at the summit. Even in summer, the route is snow-covered, but it is marked and packed by the hut keeper, the ultimate goal of this 45-minute hike. You will arrive exhausted because at such an altitude walking burns a lot of energy! Walk slowly to save your energy.
