This is the popular name given to the narrow gorges of the Sanzar River, an obligatory passage between Tashkent and Samarkand that winds between the Nourata Mountains and the foothills of the Turkestan Mountains. Literally, it means "where the snake passed". It is also known as the "Gates of Tamerlan". The best Uzbek apples grown in the region are sold here, spreading out along the roads during the harvest season. Hundreds of crates follow one another, but every driver claims to know the best seller..
