Russian avant-garde theater has been emulated the world over. In Tashkent, it was Mark Weil (a visionary director murdered for his artistic choices) who founded this independent theater in the 1970s with a group of young student actors. One of the first theaters of its kind to appear in the Soviet bloc. With its eclectic decor, the artistic and bohemian atmosphere of the hall and communal areas also serve as galleries for contemporary art exhibitions. Some plays are subtitled in English.
