This magnificent Baroque complex painted in bright red impresses and is sublime in summer when the golden sun hits its wide windows. Today, it houses the Ossolineum Library, an impressive collection of manuscripts and documents that is virtually sacred in terms of Polish cultural history. The collection, assembled from 1817 onwards by the great philosopher Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński, curator of the Imperial Library in Vienna, precursor of Slavic studies and a great name in Polish Enlightenment.

La Fondation, selon la volonté du fondateur, devait se composer de jeux: une collection de livres, manuscrits, et le musée numismatique,
offert par JM Ossolińskiego, et l'imprimerie.
Après la seconde guerre mondiale, les frontières de la Pologne ont changé et Lviv s'est retrouvé en Union soviétique.
Même pendant la guerre, en 1944 une partie précieuse de la collection a été évacué de Lviv -
un total d'environ 11 000 gravures anciennes, dessins, diplômes et manuscrits (y compris le manuscrit de « Pan Tadeusz »).
Ces collections, cachées dans la Basse-Silésie dans la région de Złotoryja, est allé à Wrocław en 1947.
En 1946-1947 partie de la collection Lviv a été transféré; 217 450 volumes , dont 7068 manuscrits et 41 505 volumes de gravures anciennes.
On estime qu'environ 70% des ressources d'Ossolineum d'avant-guerre est resté à Lviv.
