Hel's fishing port dates back to the 9th century. It was originally located 2 km northwest of the present-day site. In the 14th century, Hel had a population of 1,200, and prospered thanks to its fishing and trading activities. The village was originally established shortly after the founding of Gdańsk, capitalizing on its strategic position at the entrance to the bay. Near the port, a small beach with an irregular shoreline borders Puck Bay. The Hel peninsula is a haven for nature lovers, sunbathers and swimmers.
