This 25-m monolithic monument was erected in 1968 on a 22.5-m artificial mound. It commemorates the heroism of Polish soldiers during the German attack on September1, 1939. At 4:47 a.m., the battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish garrison guarding the military depot at Westerplatte. Despite the Germans' clear superiority, the soldiers led by Major Henryk Sucharski did not surrender until September 7, after fierce resistance.
