Excursion not to be missed in Suwałszczyzna if you like the atmosphere of border regions and ethnography. It is the last Polish city before Lithuania. Some of the 5 000 inhabitants of the village are ethnically Lithuanian. In the heart of the city there is a superb Baroque Baroque church, built in 1610, in the rococo interior. Another impressive building, the synagogue of 1860, one of the few to not have been destroyed by the Nazis, witness to the important Jewish history of the small town. Border Foundation, (Fundacja PograniczeUne), a foundation of Polish artists passionate about the region's multiculturalism, strives to study and preserve the different cultural heritages of the region. The foundation opened a gallery of good art in the synagogue; Members are very welcoming, happy to satisfy the curiosity of visitors. If you want to immerse yourself even more from the Lithuanian atmosphere, you can visit the tiny town of Puńsk, 80% of which are Lithuanian and have their own schools, traditions and cultural events. Sejny and Puńsk are both 30 km from Suwałki and 25 km from each other. They are well connected by bus between them and in Suwałki.
