CATEDRAL SANTA MARÍA
The cathedral was inaugurated on December 8, 1711, after more than 120 years of work! It is the largest and most beautiful of all the cathedrals built in Honduras. Four of the sixteen original golden and gilded altars and altars were safeguarded, carved by Andrés and Francisco de Ocampo in the 1630 s. The autel is the most sumptuous. another reveals a Christ Black. The clock (el Reloj) is a real gem. Made by the Moors in 1100 and placed at the Alhambra of Granada (Spain), it was given at the church of La Merced de Comayagua (which was then a cathedral) on the order of King Felipe III in 1636. In 1711, she finally found her final place in the new cathedral. Interesting detail: the Roman numeral for IV is written III, as it was used in the past.
