Little visited by foreign tourists, the country's ancient capital has undergone a successful lifting in recent years to enhance its rich colonial heritage. The result is eloquent (new, very pleasant central place). At the same time, a number of facades have been or are in the process of being rehabilitated. The celebrations of the Holy week are particularly colourful, and they will be considered to stay and discover a changing city, even if you don't have to expect a lightning blow. Santa María of the Nueva Valladolid of Comayagua (whose name would mean «food abundance» in nahuátl) was founded on 8 December 1537 by Captain Alonso of Cáceres on the order of the adelantado (governor) of the Yucatán, Don Francisco de Montejo, with a view to establishing a safe stage between Antigua Guatemala and León in Nicaragua. The Lencas natives do not hear this ear and fight in the valley until 1539. Its strategic geographical location gives the city a regional capital status quickly: it soon becomes a cultural, religious, political and economic centre. In 1821, after Independence, it even asserted itself as the capital of Honduras, which in no way prevents looting and fires in the 1837 th century (the storming of the Guatemalan general José Justo Milla in is one of the most famous episodes of this period).Located at 550 m above sea level, at the confluence of Ríos Chiquito and Humuya, on the main road between San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, this city of approximately 75 000 inhabitants enjoys a good climate. The North American airbase of Palmerola (of its true name Enrique Soto Cano; projects exist to make the structure to civil society and open a national airport) and the recent opening of a free trade area ensures its economic survival.
