LANCETILLA BOTANICAL GARDEN
Founded in 1926 by biologist Dr. Wilson Popenoe on behalf of the Tela Railroad Company. It is described as the second largest botanical garden in the world, which is certainly not the case, unless the primary and secondary humid forest on the flanks of the Cordillera is recorded. It is home to indigenous species, but also from all over the world, including the African palm tree (Elaeis inermicapsifer), which is now one of the lance of the Honduran agricultural economy.
The name of the park comes from a small, thorny, endemic palm tree (Astrocaryum standleyanum). A trail allows an approach to flora and fauna of the 78 ha authorized (arboretum comprising 636 species of 105 families). One hour's walk is enough. You can also immerse yourself from the special atmosphere of the bamboo and royal palms and contemplate the beautiful specimens of snakes from the small museum in the visitor centre. Finally, it is possible to bathe in the Río (but not very hot).
To get there, hire the services of a travel agency or rent a bicycle in Tela, it is two steps (5 km from the center, to say true). There is still the possibility to take a bus to El Progreso and get down at the entrance level: You have a 45-minute walk to win the visitor centre.
Luc, from the Gran Central Hotel (a compatriot), offers a very interesting walk (for his guests) to a hamlet lost in the mountains, crossing part of the park.
