Ciudad Vieja is an archaeological site located 10 km south of Suchitoto. It houses the first Spanish settlement in the region. There are still ruins today. These remains correspond to the first city of San Salvador, founded by Spanish captain Pedro de Alvarado on 1 April 1528 (and also his second city based in Central America after Santiago de Guatemala). The site has been classified as a national historic site since 1975. El Salvador has just begun its efforts to classify it as UNESCO World Heritage.
