The Maya archaeological site of Santa Leticia is located in the region of Ahuachapán, a few kilometres from the village of Apaneca, at an altitude of 1 400 metres. Dating back to 600 BC, this 15 ha site is known for its three imposing monoliths of "Gordinflones" or "Potbelly". Some archaeologists consider the Maya expansion in El Salvador to have started since this site, since these monolithic statues look north, and illustrate women supporting their stomachs of both hands (as if they were pregnant). The Santa Leticia Mountain Resort in Apaneca offers a guided tour of the site and the Café Apaneca coffee Operation.
