A small colonial village situated at 1 455 m above sea level (it is cool at night) and whose church was destroyed by the earthquake of 2001, but rebuilt since then, Apaneca is an ideal place of stay on the road to "Las de las Flores". Many interesting sites are nearby: Laguna de Las Ninfas and Verde Lagoon (on foot, superb excursions of one day), Cerro Cerro (1 841 m, walks in the middle of sunflowers), national park of El Imposible (hiking), Juyúa (gastronomic festival) or Nahuizalco (village of craftsmen). The climate is healthy, people are welcoming and relatively decent prices. Beware, the wind can blow very strong, especially from November to March (the name of the city means «river of the winds» in native dialect). There are beautiful wooden articles.
