LA LAGUNA CUZCACHAPA
A lake with many legends and beliefs, where you can discover its inhabitants, fishermen, ducks, torogoz and hummingbirds.
On its northern shore, archaeologists have discovered traces of the first human occupation in the area of Chalchuapa, perhaps because the lake was an important place of water supply around 1200 BC.
If you visit the lagoon very early in the morning, you will come across locals jogging, fishermen on the shore throwing their lines and ducks swimming calmly on these blue waters.
Surrounded in part by the high walls of the ancient volcano, the walk is very pleasant. You can hear and see many birds such as torogoz and hummingbirds.
A veil of mystery covers the Laguna de Cuzcachapa, with different legends and beliefs, such as the legend of the "Viejita Tamalera" which says that at the bottom of the lake there was a palace of an Indian princess, or the beliefs that say that it has no bottom or that it is directly connected to the church of Santiago Apstol.
For years, efforts have been made to prevent the lake from being invaded by aquatic plants, and bathing and washing clothes are prohibited in order to preserve the ecosystem of the Laguna de Cuzcachapa.
