Chalchuapa is located 79 kilometers from the capital. The city was the most notable center of the Poqomam civilization, Maya-Quiché family, and today constitutes the largest archaeological zone of the country: to the north, the finca San Antonio and El Trapiche; to the south, Tazumal; to the center, Casa Blanca; to the northeast, Las Victorias. This town, whose name means "river of jadeite" in Nahuatl, has a beautiful historic center with many colonial houses and a beautiful church from the Spanish period, Santiago Apóstol, dating from the 18th century and restored in 1999; its clock was made in England and brought from Spain in 1874.
