The Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo was built on Plaza Las Américas - Plaza Salvador del Mundo - in 1942 in honour of the patron saint of San Salvador. This monument, which represents Christ standing on a high pedestal, is the work of José María Barahona Villaseñor. Damaged by the earthquake of 1986, the monument was completely restored. The inhabitants gathered there during the celebrations of the San Salvador festivities, celebrated from 1 st to 6 th August. A golden statue of the Salvadoran martyr, Monsignor Romero, also on the square. It was here that ceremonies of beatification of the martyr were held on 23 May 2015.
